SPC vs. Laminate for New Jersey Basements: Which Floor Holds Up?
If you are finishing a basement in Randolph, Rockaway, Parsippany or anywhere in North Jersey, the floor is the first decision that can go wrong. Basements here deal with damp concrete, the occasional water heater leak and snow melt tracked in through a walk-out door. Two products come up most: SPC vinyl plank and laminate. They look alike in the box, but they behave very differently when water shows up.
The short answer
For most New Jersey basements, SPC (stone polymer composite) vinyl plank is the safer choice. Its core is made of limestone and PVC, so it does not swell when it gets wet. Laminate has a wood-fiber core; many newer laminates resist spills on the surface, but water that sits on the floor or comes up from the slab can still reach the core and make planks swell at the edges.
Side by side
| SPC vinyl plank | Laminate | |
|---|---|---|
| Core | Rigid stone polymer composite (limestone + PVC) | High-density wood fiberboard |
| Water | Waterproof plank; does not swell | Surface may be water-resistant; core can swell if water sits or seeps from below |
| Dimensional stability | Very stable as temperature and humidity change | Can expand and contract more in damp seasons |
| Feel and sound | Quieter and softer with an attached pad | Harder, more hollow sound without a good underlayment |
| Installation | Click-lock floating floor | Click-lock floating floor |
| Best rooms | Basements, kitchens, baths, laundry, mudrooms | Dry above-grade rooms: bedrooms, living rooms, offices |
What to check in your basement first
- Active water. A waterproof floor protects the floor, not the room. If the basement takes on water after storms, fix the grading, gutters or sump pump first.
- Slab moisture. Tape a 2 x 2 ft sheet of plastic to the concrete for 24 to 48 hours. Darkening or droplets underneath means moisture is coming up; follow the flooring's installation instructions for a vapor barrier over concrete.
- Flatness. Click-lock floors need a flat slab. Grind down high spots and fill low spots before installing.
- Height at the stairs. A 5 mm or 7 mm plank adds very little height, which helps at the bottom stair and at doors.
5 mm or 7 mm for a basement?
Both work. Our 5 mm SPC uses a classic 7.13" x 48" plank with a 1 mm attached IXPE pad and costs $1.64 per sq ft. The 7 mm uses a wider 9" x 60" plank with a 1.5 mm pad and costs $2.05 per sq ft; it feels more solid and quieter, which many people like in a family room or home gym. Every color has a 22 mil wear layer, so both handle kids, pets and furniture.
Colors that work well below grade
Basements often have less daylight, so lighter floors help a room feel bigger. Popular choices:
- Coastal Breeze: light greige oak, brightens a darker room
- Golden Maple: warm pale oak and maple look
- Santorini Beige: soft beige-greige that hides everyday dust
- Rustic Storm: weathered gray for a modern rec room
